You will need a freight vehicle permit for escort vehicles when you do not have a valid Yukon licence plate and are escorting loads:
- into or out of the Yukon; or
- within the Yukon.
Who doesn't need a freight vehicle permit to escort vehicles?
If your vehicle is registered in the Yukon, you do not need a freight vehicle permit to escort vehicles.

You can call ahead or apply online with all information about your weights, dimensions, destination and origin. Analysis might be required, which can take up to 3 business days. It depends on:
- load weight;
- route; and
- dimensions.

Before you apply for a permit, you must be a carrier in good standing with the National Safety Code of your home jurisdiction.
Before you start the online permit process, make sure you have everything you need, including:
- current vehicle details, dimensions and weights;
- route information; and
- a credit card to pay the permit fee.
Other ways to get a freight vehicle permit for escort vehicles
You can get a freight-vehicle permit for an escort vehicle at the Whitehorse weigh station or Watson Lake weigh station.
When you apply for this permit, you need to provide the following information before the permit can be issued.
- Copy of valid vehicle insurance
- Valid driver’s licence
In some cases you'll need to provide the following. The carrier compliance officer will let you know if these are needed.
- Lease agreement
- Copy of bill of lading
