If you do not have valid vehicle Yukon registration and you have passengers in your vehicle, you need a freight-vehicle permit for buses when you're:
- dropping off;
- picking up; or
- hauling.
If you have valid Yukon registration, you do not need this permit.
You can call ahead or apply online with all information about your weights, dimensions, destination and origin. Analysis might be required, which can take up to 3 business days. It depends on:
- load weight;
- route; and
- dimensions.
Apply for a permit online
Before you apply for a permit, you must be a carrier in good standing with the National Safety Code of your home jurisdiction.
Before you start the online permit process, make sure you have everything you need, including:
- current vehicle details, dimensions and weights;
- route information; and
- a credit card to pay the permit fee.
Permit fee
The fee for this permit is $60 plus $3 per metric tonne, based on actual vehicle weight.
Other ways to get a freight vehicle permit
You can get a freight-vehicle permit for buses at the Whitehorse weigh station or Watson Lake weigh station.
Required documents
When you apply for a permit, you need to provide the following information before the permit can be issued.
- Copy of valid vehicle insurance
- Valid driver’s licence
In some cases, you'll need to provide the following. The carrier compliance officer will let you know if these are needed.
- Lease agreement
- Copy of bill of lading
Carrying dangerous goods
If you are carrying dangerous goods, you need a current Dangerous Goods Training Certificate.
