With a through-freight permit, you can:
- register your commercial vehicle in the Yukon temporarily; and
- haul or escort goods only through the Yukon.
This permit is issued when:
- you are not loading or unloading goods within the Yukon;
- your commercial vehicle:
- does not have a valid Yukon vehicle registration; and
- is transporting goods through the Yukon; or
- your escort vehicle:
- does not have a valid Yukon vehicle registration; and
- is escorting a load through the Yukon.
You can call ahead or apply online with all information about your weights, dimensions, destination and origin.
Analysis may be required to prepare your permit, which can take up to 3 business days. This depends on:
- load weight;
- route; and
- dimensions.
Apply online
Before you apply for a permit, you must be a carrier in good standing with the National Safety Code of your home jurisdiction.
Before you start the online permit process, make sure you have everything you need, including:
- current vehicle details, dimensions and weights;
- route information; and
- a credit card to pay the $60 permit fee.
Apply in person
You can get a through-freight permit at the Whitehorse weigh station or Watson Lake weigh station.
When you apply for a through-freight permit, you need to provide the following information before the permit can be issued:
- copy of valid vehicle insurance;
- copy of valid vehicle registration; and
- valid driver’s licence.
In some cases you will need to provide the following. The carrier compliance officer will let you know if these are needed.
- Lease agreement
- Copy of bill of lading

If you're carrying dangerous goods, you need a current Dangerous Goods Training Certificate.
