Learner
You must meet the following conditions to be eligible.
- Have a valid class 5 driver's licence
- Have a valid ID
- Have passed learner class 6 motorcycle/moped written exam
Or
- Be at least 15 years old
- Have a valid ID
- Passed the learner class 6 motorcycle or moped written exam
- Entered the Graduated Driver Licensing program (GDL)
A learner class driver requires a co-driver at all times.
Novice
- Be at least 16 years old
- Have a valid ID
- Have valid class 7 driver's licence through the Graduated Driver Licensing program (GDL) for a minimum of 6 months
- Logged 30 hours of riding time with a valid co-driver
- Have passed a class 6 road test
Full licence
You must meet the following conditions to be eligible.
- Have a valid class 6 driver's licence through the Graduated Driver Licensing program (GDL) for a minimum of 18 months
- Have a valid ID
Or
- Have a valid full class 5 driver's licence
- Have a valid ID
- Have passed a class 6 written exam
- Have passed a class 6 road test
Bring:
- 1 document to prove your identity; and
- 2 documents to prove your Yukon residency.

If you're under 18
If you're under 18, a parent or legal guardian must go with you when you get your motorcycle licence.
Your parent or guardian must also bring 1 document to prove your identity and 2 documents to prove their Yukon residency.
Parents who want to withdraw their approval can do so by returning the driver’s licence to their nearby Motor Vehicles office.
Knowledge test
- Study the motorcycle Learn to Ride Smart handbook.
- Go to the nearest Motor Vehicles office to take the test.
- Bring a copy of your class 5 driver's licence
- Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
We'll let you know if you pass or fail immediately.
If you fail your 1st test, you can retake the test the following day. A $20 fee is charged each time you take the test.
Studying for the road test
After you pass the knowledge test, we will give you the Tuning Up for Riders guide book to study for your road test.
Learning to ride
While you are learning to ride, you will need to follow the following 3 rules.
- A co-driver has to have a valid motorcycle licence for at least 2 years.
- Your co-driver must follow you on a second motorcycle or in a car.
- You cannot carry passengers.
Taking the road test
- Contact your nearest Motor Vehicles office to set up an appointment to take your road test.
- You will need to bring a licensed and insured motorcycle in acceptable mechanical condition.
- Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
We'll let you know if you pass or fail immediately.

We'll test your vision at the Motor Vehicles office after your road test.
If you do not pass the vision test , you may need further vision testing by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. A motor vehicles client service agent will let you know what is needed from this visit.
If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses when you drive, this should be noted on your class 5 licence. The restriction will be noted on your new motorcycle licence.
Once you pass the knowledge test, road test and vision test, we'll issue you a temporary licence at the Motor Vehicles office. This temporary licence is valid for 90 days.
The licence costs $50, which you can pay by cash, credit card or debit.
We will mail you your new motorcycle license within 7 to 10 business days.
