Important changes for the 2024-2025 trapping season

There are no regulation changes for the 2024-2025 trapping season.

Find trapping-related forms

Trapping-related forms are available online or at a Department of Environment office.

You can complete these forms at your convenience, but many of them should be signed just prior to submitting them at a Department of Environment office.

Humane trapping standards and certified traps

The Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) sets minimum standards for the humane trapping of 19 species of furbearing animals. This includes 9 Yukon species:

• Beaver
• Coyote
• Ermine/weasel
• Fisher
• Lynx
• Marten
• Muskrat
• Otter
• Wolf

Certified traps

In Canada, the trap testing program is administered by the Fur Institute of Canada. It's the trap manufacturer’s responsibility to have their traps certified. When a trap model is certified, the manufacturer will stamp the certification number on all new traps of that make and model.

You can legally use identical traps (same make and model) manufactured before certification as long as you have not modified the traps.

When buying new traps, consult the Fur Institute of Canada’s complete list of certified traps. It names traps that have already been certified for species that will be regulated in the future.

Studies

Wolf study

The Government of Yukon has put radio collars on 3 wolves in the Southern Lakes region.

Trappers in Game Management Zone 7 (west of Whitehorse): provide a 2 cm x 2 cm sample of wolf hide when you submit wolf pelts for sealing at the Department of Environment office in Whitehorse.

Lynx study

This trapping season, we'll ask individual trappers to submit a limited number of lynx carcasses in:

• Watson Lake;
• Mayo; 
• Faro; 
• Whitehorse; and 
• the Kluane Lake area 

If we do not contact you, do not submit any lynx carcasses. Our offices will not accept them.

Wolverine study

We invite you to submit the following to your nearest Department of Environment office: 

• Whole wolverine carcasses
• Wolverine skulls

What you need to bring

Along with the lynx or wolverine carcass, bring the:

• trapper name;
• trapping licence number;
• trapping concession area number;
• harvest date; and
• sex of animal.

Rewards

You'll get $50 for each lynx and wolverine carcass.
