Nominate someone for the Council of the Federation Literacy Award

The Premiers from each of the 10 provinces and 3 territories present the Council of the Federation Literacy Award for International Literacy Day. Each year, this award celebrates a Yukoner or Yukon organization who is changing lives through literacy.

The award is presented to a nominee who:

  • has a vision to improve literacy and can inspire others;
  • collaborates with partners in new and exciting ways;
  • is not afraid to try something new that will benefit the community;
  • values equity, cooperation and civic responsibility; and
  • prioritizes success over acknowledgment.

Deadline

The 2026 nomination deadline is June 30, 2026.

Recognition

The recipient will be recognized publicly for their achievements at an award ceremony. They will receive:

  • a Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion; and
  • a certificate from the Premier.

Who can you nominate?

You can nominate someone or an organization who helps Yukoners improve their literacy skills to meet their goals.
 

This award honours:

  • learners;
  • educators;
  • practitioners;
  • volunteers;
  • First Nations' programs;
  • community organizations; and
  • businesses.

Types of literacy

This award recognizes many forms of literacy, including:

  • Cultural literacy: engaging with traditions and history.
  • Physical literacy: improving the ability to control and understand your body.
  • Digital literacy: finding, evaluating and communicating information using technology.
  • Critical literacy: analyzing ideas, opinions and perspectives.
  • Media literacy: interpreting signs and symbols in mass media.
  • Health literacy: understanding information that is important to your well-being and health.

How is excellence in literacy shown?

Past recipients have:

  • set up new literacy programs or literacy organizations;
  • provided outstanding literacy services;
  • made a difference in people's lives with tutoring or adult education;
  • inspired others as an adult literacy learner;
  • made legal information more accessible;
  • taken innovative approaches to literacy as reconciliation; and
  • worked to revitalize a Yukon First Nations language.

Eligibility

A nominee must:

  • be a Yukon resident who is at least 19 years of age;
  • or an organization in the Yukon; and
  • be involved in enhancing any kind of literacy.

The Council of the Federation has traditionally focused on English, French and Indigenous languages, but nominees in all languages will be considered.

  2. Submit the nomination by June 30, 2026 by email or mail.

What happens after a recipient is selected?

We'll contact the recipient and all nominators. We'll host an award ceremony on or near International Literacy Day.
