Register a boiler or pressure vessel

Before you begin constructing or installing a boiler or pressure vessel system, you need: 

  • design approval; and registration.

You have to renew your registration annually.

Requirements

You must get design approval and registration for:

  • a boiler or pressure vessel of 10 kilowatts or greater; and
  • a pressure piping system.

You don't need to register boilers or pressure vessels smaller than 10 kilowatts.

You must get electrical or mechanical permits to install all boilers and pressure vessels.

Get a Canadian registration number and a Yukon identification number

Get these required documents from the manufacturer.

  • The boiler or pressure vessel design;
  • data report;
  • owner’s name; and
  • the location of the installation.

We'll invoice the manufacturer a fee to register the design. The fee varies by equipment.

Submit the required documents

The manufacturer must submit the required documents to the chief mechanical inspector.

Get an inspection to get your certificate of registration

You must get all new installations inspected. Once it passes inspection, we'll issue you a certificate of registration. You must place the certificate near the boiler or vessel so it's visible and can be read.

Report an accident

The owner or person in charge must report all accidents to the chief mechanical inspector. This includes any accident involving a:

  • boiler;
  • pressure vessel;
  • power plant; or
  • heating plant.
