Find out if you need a temporary operating permit
You can get a temporary operating permit if you have:
- a personal vehicle with no valid registration from anywhere; and
- an empty commercial vehicle with no valid registration from anywhere.
This permit can be valid for up to a maximum of 10 days. The expiry date of the permit must not be after the expiry date of vehicle's insurance.
How to apply
Personal vehicle
If you have a personal vehicle, go to your nearest Motor Vehicles office.
Commercial vehicle
You can get a temporary operating vehicle permit after business hours at the Whitehorse weigh station or Watson Lake weigh station.
When you apply for a temporary operating permit, you need to provide the following information before the permit can be issued.
- Copy of valid vehicle insurance
- Valid driver’s licence
- Copy of valid vehicle ownership, such as a bill of sale
In some cases you will need to provide a lease agreement. The carrier compliance officer or Motor Vehicles agent will let you know when it's needed.

The fee for the permit is $10.
