The Government of Yukon manages and provides funding or in-kind support to 9 research facilities in the Yukon:
Beaver Creek Permafrost Test Site
12 full scale instrumented highway test embankments involving various adaptation techniques to address the impacts of melting permafrost on highways constructed over ice rich permafrost terrain.
Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest
Named after 2 Yukon forestry pioneers, the Research Forest has been the primary site of forest research in Yukon since its inception in 1964. The Research Forest is a leader in sustainable forest management for scientific research, education and public recreation. It's a 248 hectare land parcel located about 19 kilometres north of downtown Whitehorse.
Herschel Island-Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park researcher accommodations
One of the historic buildings at Pauline Cove is made available for accommodations (depending on availability) for researchers. Generally, researchers must be completely self-supported.
H.S. Bostock Drill Core Library
Run by the Yukon Geological Survey (YGS), the facility supports geoscience research, mineral exploration and provides information to enable stewardship and sustainable development of the territory’s energy, mineral and land resources. The facility houses the Yukon rock sample collection and over 120,000 metres of diamond drill core and contains lapidary equipment for processing rock, drill core and surficial materials.
Kluane Lake Research Station
Kluane Lake Research Station (KLRS) is located near the Alaska Highway, 220 kilometres northwest of Whitehorse, Yukon, on the south shore of Kluane Lake. The extreme elevation difference between Kluane Lake and the crest of the St. Elias Mountains establishes a strong gradient in environmental attributes and results in a remarkable diversity of research opportunities within a small geographical area.
Wolf Creek Research Basin
Nested hydrometeorological catchment with instrumented sub-basins of 195, 71, 14.5 and 7.8 square kilometres providing continuous data since 1992. The basin has 3 meteorological stations at elevations of 750 (boreal forest ecosystem), 1250 (subalpine taiga ecosystem) and 1615 metres (alpine tundra ecosystem) operating continuously since 1993, each recording 20 to 30 parameters. A groundwater monitoring well has operated since 2003. There is also other specialized instrumentation running continuously for specific projects.
Yukon Archives
The Yukon Archives acquires, preserves and provides access to the Yukon's documentary heritage. Photocopy, map and photograph reproduction services are available. Government of Yukon Research Farm A 2 hectare field based agriculture experimental station that is located within the Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest.
Yukon Energy Mines and Resources Library
The Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Library offers collections and research services in the areas of energy, mining, oil and gas, geology, agriculture, forestry, environment, land use, Yukon history and Indigenous peoples. In addition to books, reports and government documents the library is home to a large collection of maps and aerial photographs.
Yukon Research Centre
Yukon Research Centre's mission is to answer northern research questions, support and advance local innovation and provide research services to visiting researchers. Thematic areas include: climate change, cold climate innovation, environmental science, society and culture, and technology innovation. These areas are supported through YRC research associates and programs.
