Nominations for the Council of the Federation Literacy Award are open until June 30, 2026.
Each year, Premiers from across Canada award a literacy hero for International Literacy Day. This award celebrates a Yukoner or Yukon organization that is changing lives through any kind of literacy. The recipient will have a vision to improve literacy, collaborates with partners in new and exciting ways and is not afraid to try something new that will benefit the community.
Literacy comes in many forms such as:
- Cultural literacy: engaging with traditions and history.
- Physical literacy: improving the ability to control and understand your body.
- Digital literacy: finding, evaluating and communicating information using technology.
- Critical literacy: analyzing ideas, opinions and perspectives.
- Media literacy: interpreting signs and symbols in mass media.
- Health literacy: understanding information that is important to wellbeing and health.
Yukoners are encouraged to nominate literacy heroes in recognition of their hard work at Yukon.ca/nominate-literacy-award.
In every Yukon community, there is a literacy advocate who has changed the way we see the world. Whether they are sharing traditional knowledge, digital skills or advocating for health and wellbeing, these individuals challenge us to be better every day. This award recognizes their vision and honours their pursuit of improving literacy in all its forms.
