Government of Yukon approves eight projects to strengthen communities across the territory

The Government of Yukon has approved eight projects across the territory through the Community Development Fund (CDF). These projects provide significant benefits to their communities and the Yukon economy.

The Community Development Fund awarded $1,073,494 in Tier 3 funding, which is available to organizations requesting over $75,000, to these projects to promote social, cultural and economic benefits for Yukoners:

  • Town of Watson Lake was approved for $245,406 for the building of a live fire training facility. This project will provide realistic training scenarios for firefighters and other emergency response agencies.
  • Dawson Golf Association was approved for $110,527 to supply and install a new solar panel array and replace the current lead acid battery bank with new lithium-ion batteries.
  • Safe at Home Society was approved for $125,000 for renovations to the Hearth’s kitchen. This project will support the facilitation of work–training programs for at-risk community members.
  • Village of Mayo was approved for $124,318 to purchase and install equipment to ensure reliable community emergency management.
  • Yukon Agricultural Association was approved for $78,090 for improved electrical installation at the Yukon Agricultural Association Fairgrounds. This project will improve the site’s ability to host events and community gatherings.
  • Humane Society Yukon was approved for $225,000 for renovations to outdoor kennels. This project will improve animal welfare and human safety.
  • Village of Teslin was approved for $76,100 for upgrades to the Teslin baseball diamond. This project will allow for extended use of the ball diamond and increased youth programming.
  • Champagne and Aishihik First Nations was approved for $89,053 to enhance the quality of programming and events held at the Cultural Centre throughout the year through upgrades to the audiovisual system.

The Community Development Fund remains a vital tool for Yukoners to access resources and advance unique and essential projects in their respective communities. The initiatives outlined here come from a variety of organizations all across the Yukon, demonstrating the great reach the fund has and how it has become renowned by so many citizens.

Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture Jen Gehmair

Humane Society Yukon sincerely appreciates the generous support received from the Community Development Fund for the replacement and expansion of outdoor kennels and fencing at the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter. This project is essential to ensuring the safety, wellbeing and proper socialization of all animals in our care.

Our current outdoor facilities no longer meet growing demand. In 2025, Humane Society Yukon cared for 425 animals – an increase of 170 from 2024 – and saw a record intake of puppies including many from communities outside of Whitehorse. This funding will allow us to align our outdoor kennel capacity with our indoor housing, significantly enhancing the quality of care we provide.

This investment will have a lasting impact, ensuring we can continue to provide safe, compassionate and appropriate care for animals across Yukon – now and into the future.

President of Humane Society Yukon Barbara Hancock
