Government of Yukon announces changes in eligibility for Whitehorse Walk-In Clinic

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and Yukon Medical Association.

The Government of Yukon is expanding access to the Whitehorse Walk-In Clinic to all Yukoners. The walk-in clinic can now see more people, including those who already have a family doctor, for quick access to care for minor illnesses, small injuries, simple procedures and other same-day needs. Yukoners with a family doctor or primary care provider are encouraged to book an appointment with their regular provider first, when possible.

This change makes it easier for people to access primary health care when their own provider is unavailable or fully booked and is aimed at reducing the volume of non-emergency visits to the Emergency Department at Whitehorse General Hospital. For long-term or follow-up care, people should continue to see their family doctor or primary care team.

The Government of Yukon will monitor demand and access at the walk-in clinic and adjust if needed.

This change is intended to reduce pressures on the Emergency Department at Whitehorse General Hospital, by giving more Yukoners another option for having non-urgent health concerns addressed with same-day service. Increasing access to the Whitehorse Walk-In Clinic is intended as an alternative to going to the hospital’s Emergency Department and we encourage anyone who has a family doctor to continue to contact them first.

Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers

The Yukon Medical Association welcomes this effort to improve timely access to care for Yukoners. Expanding eligibility at the Whitehorse Walk-In Clinic creates an additional option for people seeking same-day, non-urgent care and may help reduce pressure on the Emergency Department, which continues to face significant physician staffing challenges.

President of Yukon Medical Association Dr. Derek Bryant
