There are many reasons to apply for access to Yukon adoption records.
- Many adopted people want to know about their biological origins and cultural heritage.
- Birth parents may also want information about the health and well-being of their children who were adopted.
- Sometimes, adopted people and birth parents want to meet.
Applying for your adoption records
You can apply to receive Yukon adoption records if you're:
- an adoptee over the age of 19; or
- a birth parent whose child is over the age of 19.
Available records
For adoptees
If you were born and adopted in the Yukon, you'll receive a copy of your:
- original birth registration in your birth name, including the names of any birth parents on record; and
- adoption order.
If you were not born in the Yukon, but were adopted in the Yukon, you'll receive:
- a copy of the adoption order.
If a disclosure veto or a no-contact declaration was filed, we cannot provide these records.
For birth parents
If you're a birth parent of a person born and adopted in the Yukon, you'll receive a copy of the:
- adopted person’s original birth registration;
- adopted person’s birth registration following adoption, including any change of name following the adoption; and
- adoption order.
Before any adoption record is released to a birth parent, we delete all identifying information about the adoptive parents to protect their right to privacy.
Cost
There is no cost to apply for these records.
How to apply
- Print and fill in this application form in full. We will not process incomplete applications.
- Attach a photocopy of your birth certificate or driver's licence to the form.
