Eligibility
To be eligible for a teaching or school administrator job, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; and
- have a Canadian teaching certificate and licence number.
Priority hiring
We hire teachers based on the following priority order from the Yukon Association of Education Professionals collective agreement (Article 49.01):
- persons of Yukon First Nation ancestry not already employed as a teacher, or existing teachers of Yukon First Nations ancestry seeking to return to their traditional territory as a teacher or school administrator;
- indeterminate teachers with 3 or more years of continuous service in the same school;
- other indeterminate teachers; and
- other applicants.
Catholic school priority hiring
For Catholic schools, we continue to apply a preference for Catholic applicants.
Teacher and administrator selection
We hire teachers and administrators based on:
- qualifications and experience criteria listed in job postings; and
- teacher qualifications, including:
- education;
- experience;
- knowledge;
- skills and abilities; and
- personal suitability.
Yukon certification
If you do not have your Yukon certification when you're hired, you'll have to get it by a specific deadline. This is a requirement of your job and is valid throughout Canada. You can get this anytime during your application process.

Security clearance
Once we hire you, you must complete and submit a vulnerable sector check. Follow these steps.
- Visit your local police detachment with 2 pieces of identification.
- Follow the instructions the police detachment gives you to complete the process. The fee for a vulnerable sector check can vary. Ask the police detachment about the cost.
- Bring the original vulnerable sector check to Department of Education's Human Resources Branch.
In person: Education Building (entrance to parking is on Hospital Road), 1000 Lewes Boulevard in Whitehorse. We’re open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Your vulnerable sector check is valid for 2 years from the date the police verifies the search. You must keep it current, even if it expires in the middle of a school year.
