Watson Lake 10-plex to welcome first residents and support community wellness

The Government of Yukon is moving forward with plans to lease out the residences of the new 10-plex in Watson Lake as soon as possible. In addition to helping address the town’s shortage of affordable housing, the facility will also include an office that could be used by an itinerant support worker.

The 10 homes will be allocated to community members on the housing waitlist and those who would benefit most from the building’s accessibility features. Each home is equipped with an apartment-sized fridge, an induction cooktop and a washer and dryer to support independent living.

This housing initiative, jointly delivered by Yukon Housing Corporation and the Department of Health and Social Services, is part of Yukon Housing Corporation’s strategic plan, Creating Home.

The opening of the Watson Lake 10-plex is a meaningful step forward for the community. Providing safe, affordable housing alongside access to supports helps residents live independently, strengthens wellness and ensures everyone has the opportunity to thrive in Watson Lake.

Premier of the Yukon Mike Pemberton

This initiative represents a significant investment in the Town of Watson Lake and its residents. Providing affordable, high-quality housing with supports to promote successful tenancies will help residents remain in place and ensure the health and wellbeing of the community.

Minister responsible for Yukon Housing Corporation Ranj Pillai

The opening of the Watson Lake 10-plex reflects the strong partnership between Health and Social Services, Yukon Housing Corporation and the community. By providing affordable homes alongside access to a community support worker, we are helping residents live independently and supporting wellness in Watson Lake. This approach responds directly to local needs and ensures the building serves the community in the best way possible.

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee

Quick facts
  • The 10-plex located at 807 Lakeview Avenue was designed with input from the Liard First Nation Chief and Council, the Town of Watson Lake Mayor and Council and community members.

  • This modern building exceeds energy efficiency requirements by 35 per cent, meaning it will use less energy than similar buildings and have reduced energy costs with a smaller environmental footprint.

  • Yukon Housing Corporation’s strategic plan, Creating Home, outlines actions to improve access to affordable housing and support services while addressing recommendations from the 2022 Yukon housing report by the Office of the Auditor General.
