Premier Mike Pemberton has issued the following statement:
“I’m pleased to congratulate Virginia Mearns on her appointment as Canada’s Arctic Ambassador, announced on Thursday, July 24, 2025, by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
"The Arctic Ambassador will work closely with our Arctic neighbours, Indigenous Peoples and governments across Canada to advance shared priorities. As Canada navigates a rapidly evolving Arctic landscape, this role with help connect Canada to the rest of the world on important issues like sovereignty, security and collaboration.
“As northerners, we know discussions about the North need to be led by those who live there. The Yukon is proud to be a leader in the national conversation on Arctic security. Our government is committed to working with the federal government to strengthen Canada’s readiness in the Arctic – all while making sure we focus on what matters most to Yukoners.
“I look forward to working with Arctic Ambassador Mearns to make sure Yukoners’ voices are heard and reflected in these important national and international discussions.”
