Premier Mike Pemberton has issued the following statement:
“On July 22, 2025, I met with Prime Minister Carney and my fellow Premiers from across Canada to discuss the progress on negotiations with the United States to establish a new economic and security relationship.
“These discussions were focused and forward-looking. Prime Minister Carney outlined the federal government's efforts to protect the Canadian steel industry and its workers – reaffirming a commitment to prioritize Canadian steel in federal procurement.
“We also heard updates on key initiatives to boost Canada’s economic resilience. I was pleased to see that the new Major Federal Projects Office and Indigenous Advisory Council will be up and running by September 1.
“At every opportunity, I brought the Yukon’s priorities to the table. I spoke directly with the Prime Minister about the need for action on affordability and the importance of moving forward with the BC – Yukon grid connection. I renewed my invitation for him to visit the Yukon and see firsthand our incredible territory.
“The First Ministers’ meetings are a chance to make real progress by working together across federal, provincial and territorial governments. Together, we are working to align our efforts to drive economic growth, strengthen trade, and respond to challenges facing Canadians.
“The Team Canada approach is about unity. It is about maintaining a constructive and stable relationship with the United States while standing firm to protect Canadian interests.
“I’m proud to bring the Yukon’s voice to the national stage, and I thank the Prime Minister and my fellow Premiers for standing together as we shape a stronger, more united future for all Canadians."
