Statement from Minister Lang for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Laura Lang has issued the following statement:

“On December 6, 1989, an armed man entered a classroom at Montreal’s École Polytechnique with the intention of targeting female students. He murdered 14 women: Geneviève Bergeron; Hélène Colgan; Nathalie Croteau; Barbara Daigneault; Anne-Marie Edward; Maud Haviernick; Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz; Maryse Laganière; Maryse Leclair; Anne-Marie Lemay; Sonia Pelletier; Michèle Richard; Annie St-Arneault; and Annie Turcotte.

“To commemorate the victims of this senseless act of violence, on December 6 we observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Today is also a part of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign.

“Gender-based violence happens everywhere – in our homes, public spaces and online. This year’s 16 Days campaign focuses on the problem of mean and hateful messages online and how they can lead to violence against women and people in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. These messages have a big impact on young people because what they see online can change how they think about the world.

“We continue to tell women and girls to be careful. But how can we stop violence from happening? Prevention must go beyond telling potential victims how to stay safe. We all need to do our part in fostering healthy masculinity – one grounded in respect, empathy and equality. To help kids understand the online world better, we must teach them how to spot fake or harmful messages. We also need to talk openly about things like gender stereotypes, healthy friendships and how to stay safe and positive when using the internet.

“For those who are experiencing gender-based violence, there is help available. Here in the Yukon, there are multiple resources to support individuals in need. I encourage you to visit Sexualized Assault Response Team, End Violence Yukon or Yukon.ca to access supports you might need. You are not at fault and there are people ready to help you.”
