Statement from the Minister of Health and Social Services on the Report of the Auditor General of Canada regarding Child and Family Services

Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers has issued the following statement:

“The Report of the Auditor General of Canada on Child and Family Services in the Yukon raises serious findings about how protection and support have been delivered to children, young adults and families. The audit covered from November 30, 2022, to March 31, 2025.

“These findings are significant. They identify gaps in timeliness, documentation, oversight and resource management that must be addressed.

“We accept the findings of the Auditor General. We take this report seriously, and I have directed the department to create a comprehensive action plan to respond appropriately.

“We are committed to taking action to ensure we are meeting the needs of children and fulfilling government’s responsibility to them.

“Some actions are already underway to strengthen processes, improve case management oversight, ensure compliance with policy and legislative requirements and enhance training. Additional steps will be informed by the report’s recommendations and by consultation with Yukon First Nations governments and service providers.

“I want to acknowledge the dedicated professionals working in Family and Children’s Services across the Yukon. Key findings in the audit identify staffing shortages as a serious problem. Our response will focus on strengthening systems and supports so that staff can do their work effectively and children receive the protection they deserve.

“We remain committed to improving accountability, strengthening partnerships with Yukon First Nations and ensuring that services to children and families meet the standards Yukoners expect. We will provide further updates as this work progresses.”
