Radon detection kits available at Yukon Public Libraries

Yukon Public Libraries now has 15 radon screeners for lending to patrons: 10 screeners will live at the Whitehorse Public Library while the other five will be in Carcross, Carmacks, Dawson, Haines Junction and Watson Lake libraries.

Anyone with a Yukon Public Library card is eligible to borrow a radon screener for up to one month. This lending program is an opportunity for people to learn about radon and to conduct a screening in their home. It is recommended that people follow up with a long-term radon test.

Each screener kit comes with a digital screening device, information about radon and instructions on how to use the screener and what to do if screening indicates a home has high levels of radon.

Quick facts
  • Radon Action Month is November.

  • Radon screening is best conducted during colder months. The screeners will be available from November to May.

  • Radon is an invisible, odourless gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in the ground and can build up in homes undetected.

  • People with questions about the radon screeners can speak with library staff.
