Government of Yukon issues special warrant to advance key priorities and maintain essential services

The Government of Yukon has issued a special warrant authorizing up to $31.7 million in government spending in 2025–26. Of this total, $15 million will be drawn from the contingency fund approved by the Yukon Legislative Assembly this spring and $16.7 million represents new funding for the current fiscal year.

The Special Warrant (No. 1) 2025–26 has been issued as an Order-in-Council under the Financial Administration Act, which was approved by Cabinet earlier today. It allows the Government of Yukon to support a number of projects across three departments in advance of the next appropriation bill being introduced in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

The special warrant contains funding authorization to deliver on priorities that support public health, community safety and infrastructure development. Specifically, this special warrant includes:

  • $15 million in the Department of Community Services to continue the Yukon’s wildfire response and recovery efforts. This amount covers initial costs early in the fire season, with additional funding expected to be required later in the fiscal year as the season progresses. The entirety of this amount will come from the government’s contingency fund and will not impact the government’s fiscal position.
  • $9.2 million in the Department of Health and Social Services to address new investments in health care. This includes securing new clinical space for outpatient counselling services while advancing aftercare recovery housing options; enhancing operations at 405 Alexander Street; supporting the development of a residence to primarily be used for medical travel and, initially, to house visiting healthcare professionals. The Government of Yukon, in agreement with the Yukon Employees Union, is also investing more to continue the signing bonus and exam fee reimbursement for nurses through to March 31, 2027.
  • $7.5 million in the Department of Tourism and Culture to advance design work on the Yukon Gathering Place Convention Centre project, a major infrastructure initiative that will increase the territory’s capacity to host conferences, cultural events and tourism activities. The full $7.5 million cost for this initiative is expected to be recovered from federal sources.

By issuing this special warrant, our government is taking necessary steps to advance critical initiatives that will benefit the territory’s future and maintain a high standard for essential services for Yukoners. These investments reflect our ongoing commitment to health care, emergency response and community infrastructure.
