About sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI)
Everyone has a sexual orientation and a gender identity. It’s one part of who we are, along with other things like culture, language and abilities. Students learn about all of these in Yukon schools.
SOGI-inclusive education is about making sure every student feels:
- safe;
- respected; and
- reflected in their school.
It focuses on creating empathy and an environment where no student experiences bullying.
What students learn
SOGI-inclusive education is an approach that fosters a welcoming learning environment. Teachers make sure that all subjects are taught in an age-appropriate and inclusive manner. Key topics include:
- Family diversity: Families can look different and all families should be respected.
- Stopping bullying: Students learn why name-calling and stereotypes are harmful and how to treat others kindly.
- Understanding identity: Students learn that people can have many different identities.
- Inclusion in curriculum: Lessons include people, stories and history from 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
- Respectful practices: Students learn to use kind and inclusive language and support and protect others who may experience harassment related to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Why it matters
The safety of all students and staff is our priority. SOGI-inclusive education helps more students feel safe at school.
Research shows that when schools are inclusive:
- bullying and discrimination decrease;
- students have better mental health outcomes; and
- all students have a better chance at success in life.
Our commitment to inclusion
In 2023, the Department of Education updated its Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy. This update aligns with Yukon’s LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan.
All Yukoners have the right to be treated with dignity regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Our schools commit to:
- upholding these human rights; and
- ensuring every student sees themselves reflected in their learning environment.
